THOUSANDS ASSEMBLE TO BUILD A GLOBAL MOVEMENT FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE: CCDS AT THE ATLANTA SOCIAL FORUM
Members of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS) joined 15,000 thousand participants and over 1,000 organizations at the June 2007 US Social Forum in Atlanta. The panels and plenaries covered issues of war and peace, economic justice, and struggles against racism and sexism. A majority of attendees were young, people of color, and organizers from grassroots organizations.
CCDS members attended this vast gathering as “learners” as well as “teachers.” CCDS organized two panels at the gathering: one on “envisioning socialism” and another on “building a progressive majority.” The presentations were designed to introduce a vision of socialism for the 21st century and discussion of how to achieve it while building broad based movements for economic and social justice. The editors of Dialogue & Initiative felt that the creativity of the presentations (some transcribed and thus should be read as presentations rather than printed articles) warranted broader distribution. As always, the editors of Dialogue & Initiative hope the materials will stimulate discussion, debate, and action.
In the months ahead, Dialogue and Initiative will publish more articles that address vision/theory and experience/practice. We urge our readers to join with us in reading, writing, debating and mobilizing to make the socialist vision a reality in the United States.
